An interesting Op-Ed piece was published today, arguing that Democrats, should they want to win the White House in 2008, need to listen to and show greater respect for pro-life women and women of faith. The most intriguing part about this op-ed was where it was published... the New York Times!.
Here are some juicy excerpts from the Op-Ed...
Even in the real world, a pro-choice Republican nominee would be a gift to the Democrats, because the Republican Party wins over so many swing voters on abortion alone....
Over 18 months, I traveled to 20 states listening to women of all ages, races, tax brackets and points of view speak at length on the issues they care about heading into ’08. They convinced me that the conventional wisdom was wrong about the last presidential contest, that Democrats did not lose support among women because “security moms” saw President Bush as the better protector against terrorism. What first-time defectors mentioned most often was abortion.
The standard response from Democratic leaders has been that anyone lost to them over this issue is not coming back — and that regrettable as that might be, there is nothing to be done. But that is not what I heard from these voters.
Many of them, Catholic women in particular, are liberal, deep-in-their-heart Democrats who support social spending, who opposed the war from the start and who cross their arms over their chests reflexively when they say the word “Republican.” Some could fairly be described as desperate to find a way home. And if the party they’d prefer doesn’t send a car for them, with a really polite driver, it will have only itself to blame.

Pro-Life Politics
I think this is an extremely important piece. Anyone who is represented by Democrats should make sure that their reps read this article. The many Catholics who have held their nose and voted Republican because of abortion and other life issues have gotten very little for their vote. The partial birth abortion ban applies to a very small number of procedures. The embryonic stem cell research veto prevented funding of experimentaion on human embryos but did not save a single one of them from eventually being discarded.
What we need to know is whether their is any hope for a change in the treatment of innocent and helpless life with the Democrats. Will pro-life Dems like Oberstar, Stupak, or Lipinski be given a voice at the convention next summer? Bill Clinton likes to say that abortion should be "safe, legal, and rare." Will anyone step up with a legislative package that will really make abortion rare?
If there is ever to be a lasting change for the unborn, abortion and other life issues should be pushed out partisan politics so that our reps can vote their conscience and voters aren't held hostage to lip service.
Pro-Life --Whole Life
The Church has always taught the unity of body and soul. The one sided activism comming from the Republican Right is horrific on economic issues. The W.A.S.P. mentality coming from Fundamentalist Protestantism--"Sola Fides"--Salvation By Faith Alone is the absolute main cause. When Fraternal Charity-"Love of Neighbor" is not a prerequisite for salvation, a major problem occurs. Remember that there are some very, very good Protestants with hearts of gold. Much much more sincere than many Catholics. But never forget the crux of the Reformation was Sola Fides. I have told a Priest for Life who works with Fr. Frank Pavone, the head of Priests for Life that the abortion issue would never be solved unless the action comes through the Democratic party. When I was a young man here in Northeastern Pa. 80% of the Catholics were Democrats. 80% of the Republicans were Protestants. This has changed some since Roe and Wade. The Bishops of the Catholic Church in America should make a forceful attempt to change the Catholic U.S. Senators with the reprobate mind. Ted Kennedy--Mass. Barbara Mikulski-- Maryland. Patrick Leahy--Vermont. are just a few. One must be Pro-Life and Whole-Life. Look at U.S. Senator Bob Casey from Pennsylvania who takes both positions. He is a man of faith and compassion. I totally agree with Michael Miller that Pro-Lifers should be given a voice at the Democratic Convention. Proof--Pro-Lifer Bob Casey beat the third ranking Republican U.S. Senator Rick Santorum by over 700, 000 votes in Penn. Let us pray the reprobate mind does not take over the Democratic party at the convention. Why? "Proverbs 26:11' states, As a dog returns to his vomit, so a fool repeats his folly.
